SULFONON – DEFINITION AND PROPERTIES

What is Sulfonon?

Sulfonon is a high-performance anionic surfactant used widely in detergent, cleaner, and industrial formulation chemistry. It is typically derived from sulfonated organic molecules and provides strong cleaning, emulsifying, and wetting capabilities.
In many applications, Sulfonon is valued for its excellent detergency, foam generation, alkali resistance, and compatibility with other surfactants.

Chemical & Physical Properties

  • Chemical Type: Anionic surfactant (sulfonate-based)

  • Appearance: Clear to slightly hazy liquid or light-colored paste (grade-dependent)

  • Ionic Character: Anionic

  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water; forms stable solutions

  • pH Range: Typically 6.5 – 8.5 (aqueous solution)

  • Foaming Power: High, stable foam formation

  • Wetting Ability: Strong wetting and penetration on textiles & surfaces

  • Detergency: High efficiency even in hard water

  • Hard Water Resistance: Good tolerance due to sulfonate structure

  • Electrolyte Stability: Good

  • Biodegradability: Generally readily biodegradable (varies by grade)

  • Viscosity: Medium to high viscosity depending on concentration

  • Compatibility:

    • Excellent with anionic surfactants

    • Good with nonionic surfactants

    • Limited with cationic surfactants (typical anionic behavior)

Key Functional Properties

  • Strong cleaning and degreasing action

  • Stable foam in soft and hard water
