INTRODUCTION

Maintaining proper hygiene in poultry farms is essential to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure high productivity. Chicken farms are environments where bacteria, viruses, and fungi can easily spread through contaminated surfaces, equipment, and housing systems.

Povidone iodine is a widely used disinfectant in poultry operations due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, effectiveness in the presence of organic matter, and safety when used correctly.

WHAT IS POVIDONE IODINE AND WHY IS IT USED IN POULTRY FARMS

Povidone iodine is a complex of iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), designed to slowly release iodine for prolonged antimicrobial activity.

It is preferred in poultry farms because:

  • It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores
  • It works in the presence of organic matter
  • It provides sustained release of iodine
  • It is less corrosive than many chlorine-based disinfectants
  • It is suitable for both surface and equipment disinfection

POULTRY FARM SURFACE DISINFECTANT FORMULA (100 KG)

Raw Material | Function | Amount (kg)

  • Povidone Iodine (10%) → Active disinfectant → 15 kg
  • Nonionic Surfactant (Alcohol Ethoxylate) → Cleaning agent → 5 kg
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine → Foam booster → 3 kg
  • Isopropyl Alcohol → Solvent → 5 kg
  • Citric Acid → pH adjuster → 1 kg
  • EDTA → Chelating agent → 0.5 kg
  • Fragrance → Odor control → 0.5 kg
  • Water → Carrier → 70 kg

Total: 100 kg

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Production begins by filling the mixing tank with the required amount of water. EDTA is first dissolved in water to stabilize the formulation and prevent interference from metal ions.

Citric acid is then added to adjust the pH to the optimal range for iodine stability. After achieving the correct pH, nonionic surfactants are slowly introduced while mixing continues to ensure proper dispersion without excessive foam formation.

Cocamidopropyl betaine is added to improve wetting and cleaning performance on contaminated poultry surfaces.

Povidone iodine is added carefully under continuous mixing to ensure uniform distribution and prevent iodine loss. Isopropyl alcohol is then incorporated to enhance drying speed and improve penetration.

Finally, fragrance is added, and the mixture is stirred for 20–30 minutes until a homogeneous solution is obtained. The product is then filtered if necessary and filled into appropriate containers.

APPLICATION AREAS IN CHICKEN FARMS

Povidone iodine disinfectants are widely used in:

  • Poultry house floors and walls
  • Feeding and drinking systems
  • Transport crates and cages
  • Equipment and tools
  • Entry sanitation points

For dairy applications, povidone iodine is also widely used in teat disinfection systems. You can explore this in our povidone iodine teat disinfectant formulation guide.

ADVANTAGES OF POVIDONE IODINE DISINFECTANTS

  • Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity
  • Low resistance development
  • Effective in organic environments
  • Safe for surfaces when properly diluted
  • Stable and long-lasting effect
