Chelating agents (also known as sequestrants) are essential auxiliary components in laundry detergent formulations.
Their main role is to bind metal ions such as calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), iron (Fe³⁺), and manganese (Mn²⁺), which can interfere with surfactant performance, cause graying of fabrics, or destabilize detergent formulations.

In water, metal ions reduce detergent efficiency by forming insoluble salts with surfactants. Chelating agents prevent this by forming stable water-soluble complexes, keeping the metal ions inactive.

In liquid detergents, chelating agents also improve storage stability and compatibility with surfactants, fragrances, and enzymes.
