LUBRICATING OILS
1. Definition
Lubricating oils are viscous fluids used to reduce friction, wear, and heat between moving mechanical parts.
They also clean, cool, and protect machinery components and improve overall efficiency.
2. Key Properties
-
Viscosity: resistance to flow; can vary for different applications
-
Thermal stability: ability to maintain properties at high temperatures
-
Oxidation stability: resists chemical breakdown over time
-
Additives: anti-wear, anti-foam, corrosion inhibitors, detergents, dispersants
-
Lubricity: reduces friction and wear between surfaces
3. Types of Lubricating Oils
A. Mineral Oils
-
Derived from refined crude oil
-
Widely used in engines, industrial machinery, and hydraulics
B. Synthetic Oils
-
Chemically engineered for superior performance
-
Types include PAO (Polyalphaolefin), ester-based, and PAG (Polyalkylene Glycol)
-
High thermal stability and low volatility
C. Semi-Synthetic Oils
-
Blend of mineral and synthetic oils
-
Offers moderate performance improvement at lower cost
D. Bio-based / Vegetable Oils
-
Derived from natural plant oils
-
Environmentally friendly and biodegradable
-
Used in some industrial applications
E. Specialty Lubricants
-
Gear oils: high-pressure applications
-
Hydraulic oils: for hydraulic systems
-
Turbine oils: for turbines and power plants
-
Compressor oils: for air compressors
-
Marine oils: for ships and marine engines
-
Transformer oils: for electrical insulation and cooling
4. Advantages
