Polyvinyl alcohols are polymers of vinyl alcohol. As the latter cannot exist in free form, all polyvinyl alcohols have so far been manufactured by polymerization of vinyl acetate which, unlike vinyl alcohol, is stable.
The polyvinyl acetate produced then undergoes alcoholysis. As the technical properties of polyvinyl alcohol depend in the first place on the molar mass and residual acetyl group content, industrial manufacturing processes are designed to ensure exact adherence to these parameters.
