Modern chalk sticks are created by combining calcium carbonate with binders, plasticizers, whitening agents and water to produce a clean-writing and durable product suitable for classroom use.
2. Formulations
White chalk formulations generally consist of calcium carbonate as the primary solid base combined with water to form a workable paste, while binders such as PVA, starch or natural gums provide structural strength. Plasticizers like glycerin or propylene glycol ensure smoother writing and reduce cracking, and optional additives such as whitening agents, anti-dust components, mold-release aids and surface coatings (wax or polymer) enhance appearance, durability and performance.
3. Production Process
The production of white chalk involves preparing a binder mixture in water, blending in calcium carbonate to form a uniform paste, filling molds with the mixture, allowing the sticks to dry until fully hardened, removing them from molds, optionally smoothing or coating the surfaces, and finally packaging the finished chalk in moisture-protected boxes.
