The active ingredients of ammonium sulfate are nitrogen and sulfur with average concentrations of 21% nitrogen and between 24% to 29% sulfur. This shows low nitrogen content relative to ammonium nitrate. Ammonium sulfate is used as fertilizer for alkaline soils because ammonium ion forms small amount of acid which lowers the pH of soil.

Its correct use regulates the pH of alkaline soil and maintains healthy nitrogen levels in the soil. Where as when used in acidic soil it can lower the pH below the optimum pH range (5.5 to 7.0) and its excess use  can cause excessive leaf growth, weak plant bodies, and excessive thatch in lawns.
